NGC-3000: one heading source for two systems

During a bridge upgrade, the existing radar and AIS may be retained while a new heading source is selected. The technical manager needs a clear arrangement: where each instrument obtains heading data and what the supply includes. The NSR NGC-3000 can be considered as a satellite heading source for such a project. Start with the data consumers so that the package addresses the vessel’s actual requirements.

One project instead of two unrelated applications

Imagine a ship that simultaneously specifies the composition of the work on radar and AIS. One application says “needs a heading sensor” and another says “ensures data for AIS.” When discussed separately, it is easy to get quotations that describe the source, the equipment being stored, and the scope of the work differently. The owner then has to figure out how these parts relate to one bridge.

Combine the initial question: what information should radar and AIS receive from the selected source? For each device, write down the exact model and its role in the project. This helps to treat NGC-3000 as part of the overall data system, while retaining each recipient’s individual requirements. The same interface name does not mean that both devices expect the same set of messages.

Which heading data do the receiving instruments require?

Distinguish the orientation of the vessel’s longitudinal axis from its direction of movement over the ground. These values may appear beside each other on a display but are not the same parameter. If the specification merely says “transmit course”, the specialist will need to clarify the data field and the requirements of the particular equipment. Resolve that ambiguity before defining the package.

NSR’s official NGC-3000 page lists IEC 61162-1/IEC 61162-2 outputs and data sentences including HDT, THS and ROT. This supports discussion of heading-data transmission, but does not establish compatibility with every radar or AIS unit. Check the documentation and available functions for the proposed NGC-3000 version and each retained instrument.

It is not necessary to transfer the entire list of manufacturer's messages to the request. For the project, it is more important to note what data the recipient really needs, how he accepts them and who confirms the applicability of the chosen solution. The rest of the compass features can be considered separately, if the vessel has a corresponding task. The list of characteristics does not replace the description of the required system operation.

Part of the projectWhat to find out for this partHow this affects quotation
Preserved radarModel, required heading data and supported inputDetermines a separate data path to the radar
AIS equipmentConfiguration, external source assignment and received messagesRequirements of the recipient regardless of radar
NGC-3000 kitActual version of blocks, antenna and available outputsAllows you to agree on a specific configuration of the source
Another consumer on the bridgeIs it necessary for this project and what data is expectedIt shows whether the system needs to be expanded.

One source does not mean one common connection.

Each consumer has their own purpose. The quotation should be clear about the boundaries of radar and AIS transmission, even when the source is shared. It is not automatically assumed that data passes through one device to another, or that a given number of outputs eliminates all distribution issues. A suitable option is determined by documentation and actual configuration.

If the list of consumers expands, go back to the original task. An additional indicator or other workplace may change the composition requirements. The need for a distributor, converter or other intermediate devices is set separately. They should not be presumed to be present inside the NGC-3000 kit and should not be added without a technical basis.

What to save when updating the bridge

Explain what remains on the ship after the upgrade: radar, AIS, previous source, indicators or part of the connections. The quotation for one bridge cannot be automatically repeated on the other, even if both purchases are referred to as a “radar satellite compass and AIS.”

A useful result of the discussion is the clear composition of the project and the designated data consumers. The decision on the applicability of the equipment, the operation and the subsequent verification is for the system-specific specialists. This technical guide helps to formulate a purchase; electrical connection schemes, instrument settings and boatmaster actions are not specified here.

Buy the NGC-3000 kit for your ship

River Marine Pro’s own card lists the price and includes two sets. Confirmation of the current price, availability and delivery date get in quotation. The card describes the NGC-3000P processor unit, the NGC-3000D display unit, the NGA300 antenna in the new mount configuration, and the antenna cable 20 m. Documents and exact composition are checked for order; catalogue image shows display.

The price of such a set does not determine the cost of the entire bridge upgrade. Additional equipment and work are included after approval. For St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladivostok or another city, specify the place of receipt and the vessel on which work is planned. Attach radar and AIS models and briefly describe what you need to save. Below is our NGC-3000 and a letter with prepared fields for this project.

Two recipients - one agreed project
  1. Radar and AIS requirements
  2. NGC-3000 configuration
  3. A separate path to each device
  4. Agreed scope of supply and work

Questions before buying

Does any radar and AIS automatically connect to the NGC-3000?

Applicability is confirmed by configuration, inputs, messages and requirements of each device. The list of compass outputs by itself does not confirm the finished interfacing.

Does the price of the equipment include the entire bridge upgrade?

This is the price described in the card set NGC-3000. Additional devices and works are included only after separate approval of the composition and total cost.

The picture shows the whole set?

On its own catalog image shows a display. The processor, antenna, cable and other positions are confirmed by an agreed delivery list.
